The Exotic Driving Experience at Walt Disney World attraction allows visitors to be drive or sit in the passenger seat of high-end luxury sport cars, including Lamborghinis, Porsches and Ferraris. For $200 to $400, customers can have the experience to drive around a race track while a professional driving instructor remains in the passenger seat. However, a recent event at the Exotic Driving Experience unexpectedly turned deadly.
Recently, a customer driving a Lamborghini at the Exotic Driving Experience track lost control of the car and hit the curb. The car had been traveling an estimated 100 miles per hour when it crashed. The driver and the passenger both had helmets and lap and shoulder belts. The driver suffered minor injuries. The driving instructor, who had been a passenger, tragically died.
Officials reported that the driver had not been under the influence of drugs or alcohol and had not been driving recklessly. The driver is not expected to be charged with any crime because the crash happened on a closed race course where drivers do not have to follow the same rules as on public roads.
Investigation into Cause of Accident
Following the accident the Florida Highway Patrol has been investigating to determine the cause. According to officials, the Lamborghini had been driving in a direction that the track was not designed to support. Some believe that this may have contributed to the cause of the accident.
According to the company that built the track, the tri-oval track had been built for cars to travel in a counterclockwise direction. Cars at the Exotic Driving Experience, however, travel in a clockwise direction. The guardrails at the track are apparently designed to direct speeding cars back toward the track. Instead of being guided back to the track, a metal beam punctured the car. Some believe that the guardrails failed because the car had been driving in the wrong direction.
The Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident. Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigators are also looking into the cause of the accident. A spokeswoman for Disney said that the Exotic Driving Experience will remain closed through May 1.
